"Worn out parts from various artworks (Habitual Instinct, Enhancer, Creation by Error)" is a photographic archive and artwork capturing discarded servo motors from my previous interactive and new media projects. These once-vital components now lie tangled and decommissioned, symbolizing the transient nature of technology and the inevitable waste it generates.
This artwork reflects on the dual nature of technological advancement: its capacity to innovate and the waste it produces. By showcasing these discarded parts, the piece invites viewers to consider the hidden costs of technology in the realm of art, challenging them to reflect on the lifecycle of materials from production to disposal as well as their own consumption and rotation/discardation in favour of the new.
As an artist working with technology, I am acutely aware of the waste generated through my practice. The creation of interactive artworks involves significant material consumption, from the electronic components to the extensive packaging and shipping processes, let alone the energy required to run the artwork. I've held onto these broken servo motors, reluctant to see them go to a landfill, believing they hold creative and archival value. Disposing of them would also require me to process my own guilt and acknowledge my art's contribution to global waste and the climate crisis.
