Rays
"Rays" is an anamorphic light sculpture drawing from Hamilton's architectural vibrancy, industrial and past heritage, and the city's natural environments. The inspiration stems from the linear lines and patterns observed during my site visit, reflecting the city's seamless blend of urban and natural spaces.
Hamilton's downtown juxtaposes urbanity with accessible nature, creating natural corridors within the urban landscape. This natural urbanism and the post-pandemic perspective highlight light as a symbol of hope, healing, and positivity. The project name, "Rays," embodies these themes, emphasizing new beginnings and discovery, as well as setting up the work for a strong visual connection to light and to the interactive sensors that are being used in the artwork. The sensors use infrared(IR) light, which can also be understood as IR rays triggered when a figure’s presence is detected.
The piece aims to inspire post-pandemic positivity and reconnect people with friends, family, and community. It reflects the ideas of change, evolution, and exploration locally, regionally and globally.
