Volumetric Video

The volumetric research was apart of the World Expo 2020 project. We were using the Microsoft Azure Kinect to capture 2.5D video footage using an early release of Depthkit's cinema capture feature. We were on set capturing depth video alongside an Arri Alexa LF film camera. This allowed us to be able to texture the 3d mesh capture through the Azure with video footage from the Arri LF. This camera pairing allowed for the creation of 4k 3d textured meshes that could be imported into TouchDesigner, Unity or other 3d software. To do this, I needed to be well versed in the capabilities of the new Microsoft Azure Kinect, the Depthkit software package, Arri camera capabilities, camera and lens calibration processes as well as onset filming protocols.

Once the film and 3d footage were captured, the footage needed to be checked and processed before it was able to be exported in a format that would be able to be used in the software for the project — which ended up being Cinema 4D.

During this project, I wrote, submitted on behalf of Tendril and was awarded the Government of Canada's IRAP ARP grant. As mentioned above, this grant was to help develop a new pipeline that would allow for faster video and 3d depth footage processing and integration into a traditional 3d animation and VFX workflow.
